I just suddenly remembered bout this..
It was last month when I got my results back..
and I had 5 friends with me when collecting the results..
One is from beloved neighbour Sg (hehe..) while the other is local..
I was surprised by the different attitude shown after getting back our respective results..
The SG guy quickly made a remark: "Oh..I didn't study much for this exam"
I had thought that he didn't do very well for it..
but it turned out that he got 73 on average!!!
Ok..
What about my local friend??
Well..
He said this: "Oh..I can't do most of the questions so I don't expect that much"
and he scored 47 on average..
Any difference here??
Yes there is..
We Asians care too much about our own pride..
When I looked at the SG guy results..
I thought " What the heck??? You got 73 and still not satisfied?"
but I wasn't really annoyed by it..
what I didn't like was when he said " I didn't study much for this exam"
When you said that, you were implying :" I could have done better if I studied"
Well, if you knew that, why didn't you study???
The logic is this...
imagine when you go to work, you say this to your boss:
"Boss, this year we are not making any profit cos I didn't work that much"
Can you say that your boss??
Can you imagine what your boss will say after that?
"so you are saying that we can earn money if you work more?? Then why don't your work then???"
That would be his reply...
Instead of bragging about your capabilities, why don't you prove that you are indeed capable of doing something?
So why did the SG guy say that he didn't study much??
For a simple reason...
there were a few people with higher marks than him and he wanted to justify that he could get high marks as well..
If you notice, we Asian like to say things like "I didn't study for the exam", "I didn't do this" ,"I didn't do that"..
We like to make a lot of excuses for our own incapabilities..
Instead of doing that, why can't we just focus on how we can improve our own self or show the world what we can do???
Why can't we just throw our pride away once in a while??
There are lots more things more important in our life other than pride...
Why can't we just follow my local friend who said that he couldn't do the qns instead of saying he didn't study???
In fact, it is more logical for him to say that he didn't study than my SG friend..
Really really disappointing..
